Prescriptions

How to order repeat prescriptions and what to do if you run out of medicine.

Order a repeat prescription

You can order repeat prescriptions:

  • in the NHS App
  • using our online form
  • by asking your pharmacy to order it for you, if they offer this

We do not take prescription requests over the phone, unless you cannot order any other way.

How long it takes

Prescriptions take 3 working days to process. If your prescription goes to a pharmacy, it may take a further 2 days for the pharmacy to process it.

Choosing a pharmacy

Your prescription will be sent electronically to the pharmacy you choose (called your nominated pharmacy). You can change it in the NHS App or by asking any pharmacy.

If you run out of medicine

If you need medicine urgently and we are closed, a pharmacy may be able to give you an emergency supply. You can also get help from NHS 111.

If you need help now

If it's a life-threatening emergency, call 999 or go to A&E.

If you need urgent medical help and we're closed, go to NHS 111 online or call 111. More about getting urgent help.
